WE ARE STRANGERS – WIR SIND FREMDE ist eine transnationale, 10-tägige Dauerperformance im öffentlichen Raum. Künstler*innen aus Thailand, Deutschland und Italien bewegen sich mit dem Fahrrad von Melchingen/Tübingen nach Venedig und entwickeln das Projekt anschließend in Thailand weiter.
Im Zentrum steht das Fremdsein als existenzielle, soziale und politische Erfahrung. Fragen wie Sind wir überall fremd? Wie lange ist man fremd? Wer entscheidet darüber? bilden den Ausgangspunkt der täglichen Performances. Das Projekt steht im Kontext des Biennale-Themas „Stranieri ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere“ und versteht Fremdsein nicht als Defizit, sondern als Ressource für Begegnung, Austausch und neue Perspektiven auf Heimat, Identität und Zugehörigkeit.
Ein zentrales Element ist das Tagesritual der Erdvermischung: Jeder Performerin bringt Erde aus dem eigenen Herkunftsort mit, die an jeder Station mit lokaler Erde vermischt wird. Ein Teil bleibt vor Ort, der andere reist weiter. Nach Venedig wird die Erde in Thailand weitergeführt und erneut vermischt. Das Ritual steht symbolisch für Verbindung, Transformation und gemeinsames Wachstum.
Die täglichen Performances integrieren gesammelte Stimmen, Geschichten und Haltungen von Menschen entlang der Route. Alle Aktionen werden dokumentiert und per YouTube-Livestream öffentlich gemacht.
We are Strangers versteht Kunst als offenen Begegnungsraum, in dem Fremdheit als Grundlage für gegenseitiges Verstehen und Akzeptanz erfahrbar wird.
WE ARE STRANGERS is a transnational, 10-day durational performance in public space. Artists from Thailand, Germany, and Italy travel by bicycle from Melchingen/Tübingen to Venice, continuing the project afterward in Thailand.
At the core of the project is the experience of being a stranger—explored as an existential, social, and political condition. Questions such as Are we strangers everywhere? How long does one remain a stranger? Who defines it? shape the daily performances. The project relates to the Biennale theme “Stranieri ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere”, understanding foreignness not as a lack but as a resource for encounter, exchange, and rethinking ideas of home, identity, and belonging.
A key element is the daily ritual of mixing soil: each performer brings soil from their place of origin, which is mixed at every station with local soil. One part remains at the site, the other continues the journey. After Venice, the soil travels on to Thailand, where the ritual continues. The process symbolizes connection, transformation, and shared growth across borders.
Daily performances take place in public spaces, art venues, or landscapes, integrating collected voices, stories, and attitudes from people encountered along the route. All actions are documented and shared via YouTube livestream.
We Are Strangers views art as a space of encounter, where foreignness is not overcome but embraced as a foundation for mutual understanding and acceptance.
