Künstlerische Annäherung an die Musuo Kultur, Lugu Hu District, Yunnan, China, 2019
Auf Einladung von Prof. Dr. Gao Xiang verbrachten wir im November 2018 und im November 2019 jeweils vier Wochen am Lugu-See im Norden der chinesischen Provinz Yunnan, bei der Volksgruppe der Mosuo. Dort hatten wir die Gelegenheit, am Projekt „Cultural Investigation and Artistic Creation – Return to the Truth“ teilzunehmen.Unter der Begleitung und Protektion des Künstlers Bowa Gong-gao, eines in dieser Region beheimateten Mosuo-Künstlers, entstand gemeinsam mit Absolvent:innen der Kunst-Meisterklasse von Prof. Dr. Gao Xiang an der Kunstakademie Kunming sowie mit weiteren chinesischen Künstler:innen eine künstlerische Annäherung an Landschaft, Kultur, Religion und Lebenswirklichkeit der Mosuo. Die Mosuo-Kultur ist als matrilinearer Clan organisiert.Es bot sich die besondere Gelegenheit, die Projekte „Fields of Vision“, „Sichtweisen“ und „Circle of Life“, die bereits in Europa und mehreren asiatischen Ländern realisiert worden waren, in China um eine weitere Facette zu erweitern.
Artistic Approach to the Mosuo Culture, Lugu Lake District, Yunnan, China, 2019
At the invitation of Prof. Dr. Gao Xiang, we spent four weeks each in November 2018 and November 2019 at Lugu Lake in the north of China’s Yunnan Province, among the Mosuo ethnic group. During this time, we had the opportunity to participate in the project “Cultural Investigation and Artistic Creation – Return to the Truth.”
With the guidance and protection of the artist Bowa Gong-gao, a Mosuo artist native to the region, an artistic exploration of the landscape, culture, religion, and everyday life of the Mosuo emerged. This work was developed collaboratively with graduates of the Master Class in Fine Arts led by Prof. Dr. Gao Xiang at the Kunming Academy of Art, as well as with other Chinese artists. The Mosuo culture is organized as a matrilineal clan system.
This unique context offered the special opportunity to expand the projects Fields of Vision, Point of view, and Circle of Life—which had previously been realized in Europe and several Asian countries—by adding a further facet in China.
fields of vision – return to the truth
Fields of vision ist ein Kommunikations- und Portrait – Projekt.
Dabei werden Menschen unterschiedlichster kultureller und gesellschaftlicher Herkunft und unterschiedlichen Alters gebeten, ihre Lebenswirklichkeit und ihre Wünsche, Lebensziele und Visionen zu verbalisieren und zu visualisieren. Begleitend werden die Augen der Teilnehmer in offenem und geschlossenem Zustand portraitiert.
Die Interviewpartner werden gebeten, zu ihren Aussagen selbst bildhafte Darstellungen auszuwählen. Beschreibung, Bild und Portrait-Aufnahme werden zu einem Triptychon zusammengefügt, das in Lentikulartechnik (Wackelbild) umgesetzt ist.
Am Projekt fields of vision waren zwischen 2015 und 2021 ca 200 Personen mit Interviews und Portraits in Deutschland, Österreich, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar und China beteiligt. Während der Flüchtlingswelle 2015 konnten wir Flüchtlingsklassen arbeiten.
Fields of Vision – Return to the Truth
Fields of Vision is a communication and portrait project.
People of diverse cultural and social backgrounds and of different ages are invited to articulate and visualize their lived realities as well as their wishes, life goals, and visions for the future. Accompanying this process, the eyes of the participants are portrayed in both open and closed states.
The interview partners are asked to select visual representations themselves in response to their statements. Textual description, image, and portrait photograph are combined into a triptych, which is realized using lenticular technology (flip image).
Between 2015 and 2021, approximately 200 people participated in the Fields of Vision project through interviews and portraits in Germany, Austria, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, and China. During the refugee influx in 2015, we were able to work with refugee classes.

„Cycle of Life“
Das Projekt ist eine körperlich, performative Annäherung an die Landschaft und die Kultur der Mosuo Minderheit. Inhaltlich bezieht es sich auf das Rad des Lebens im Zhamei-Tempel und die darin enthaltenen fünf Elemente Wasser, Erde, Feuer, Holz und Metall, die als konzeptuelle Grundlage dienen. Die Mosuo-Kultur integriert Elemente des tibetischen Buddhismus (vor allem der Gelugpa-Tradition) sowie die animistische, naturbezogene Daba-Religion, die als eigenständige indigene Glaubenspraxis der Mosuo gilt.
Die performativen Handlungen wurden in Bildsequenzen dokumentiert und anschließend als Lentikulardrucke umgesetzt. Durch die Überlagerung mehrerer Bildebenen entstehen visuelle Übergänge, die minimale körperliche Bewegungen sichtbar machen. Die Wahrnehmung der Bildinhalte verändert sich in Abhängigkeit vom jeweiligen Blickwinkel.
Die Betrachtenden können diesen Wahrnehmungsprozess durch ihre eigene Position im Raum beeinflussen. Dadurch wird das statische Bild um eine zeitliche und räumliche Dimension erweitert, in der Bewegung und Wahrnehmung integrale Bestandteile der Arbeit sind.
Cycle of Life
This project is a physical, performative approach to the landscape and culture of the Mosuo minority. Conceptually, it refers to the Wheel of Life in the Zhamei Temple and the five elements contained within it—water, earth, fire, wood, and metal—which serve as the project’s conceptual foundation. Mosuo culture integrates elements of Tibetan Buddhism (primarily from the Gelugpa tradition) as well as the animistic, nature-based Daba religion, which is regarded as the Mosuo’s distinct indigenous belief system.
The performative actions were documented in image sequences and subsequently realized as lenticular prints. Through the superimposition of multiple image layers, visual transitions emerge that make minimal bodily movements perceptible. The perception of the image content shifts depending on the viewer’s angle of view.
Viewers can actively influence this perceptual process through their own position in space. In this way, the static image is expanded by a temporal and spatial dimension in which movement and perception become integral components of the work.
Sichtweise
Sichtweise ist der Versuch, sich dem Lebensraum der Musuo, durch die Augen der Menschen Vorort anzunähern. Mit einer Macro Kamera wird die Spiegelung im Auge aufgenommen.
Point of view
Perspective is an attempt to approach the living environment of the Mosuo through the eyes of the people on site. Using a macro camera, the reflection within the eye is captured.
